A partire dal prossimo autunno Pininfarina interromperà la produzione delle Alfa Romeo Brera e Spider, destinate così alla pensione dopo cinque anni di carriera commerciale. Ne dà notizia la stessa azienda torinese. “La produzione delle Alfa Romeo - si legge nel bollettino finanziario relativo al primo semestre 2010 - terminerà in autunno”, in ossequio all’accordo firmato con Gian Mario Rossignolo per l’acquisto dei macchinari utilizzati nello stabilimento di Grugliasco. Pininfarina ha inoltre terminato di assemblare anche la Ford Focus C-C, anch’essa di stanza nell’hinterland torinese.

L’Alfa Romeo Brera non verrà sostituita da alcun nuovo modello. Identica sorte per la Spider, la cui casella prevista nel piano industriale non ha impedito ai vertici di Fiat di congelare il progetto.

These two models have been built by Pininfarina since 2005 and 2006 respectively but saw little market success, criticised in particular for excessive weight and poor handling, and during the last two years their production has virtually come to a standstill, though there was a small recent boost when the limited-edition Brera Italia Independent was launched. Born during the era of Fiat Group's collaboration with GM, the sports coupé and its convertible sister use a platform derived from the U.S. carmaker's portfolio. However they both received highly acclaimed new turbo petrol engines during the last model year in an attempt to galvanise sales. The Brera and Spider are built at the Grugliasco factory which is now actually owned by DeTomaso Automobili, completing the Alfa Romeo contract was built into the sale of the plant.
